- Introduction to Stevia: The video begins with an introduction to stevia, highlighting its use as a calorie-free sugar substitute due to its naturally sweet leaves. The presenter operates a small backyard gardening YouTube channel focused on organic, cost-effective gardening, particularly in containers.
- Soil Preparation: A well-draining soil mix is crucial for growing stevia, which thrives even in poor soil conditions. The presenter mixes homemade compost, regular potting mix, and trace elements in a wheelbarrow to create a nutrient-balanced yet free-draining growing medium.
- Planting Process: Stevia plants are planted in affordable pots sourced from a local hardware store. The plants are positioned slightly deeper than their original pot to encourage root growth from the stems, enhancing drought resistance.
- Care and Maintenance: Tips include minimal nutritional needs, suggesting occasional feeding with a liquid seaweed fertilizer. Stevia requires five to six hours of sunlight daily and can be relocated easily to manage temperature exposure. Pest management is addressed, noting common issues with aphids and slugs.
- Harvesting: Harvesting is recommended in autumn when the leaves reach peak sweetness, although leaves can be picked as needed for use in salads or smoothies.
