How to Grow Garlic at Home: A Comprehensive Guide
Garlic is a versatile and flavorful herb that can add depth and aroma to any dish. Growing your own garlic at home can be a rewarding and cost-effective endeavor. In this article, we will provide you with valuable information and updates on how to successfully grow garlic. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a beginner, these tips and techniques will help you achieve a bountiful harvest. So let's dive in!
1. Choosing the Right Time to Plant Garlic
The ideal time to plant garlic is during the autumn or the beginning of winter. This allows the garlic cloves to establish themselves before the colder months set in. Planting garlic during this period allows for a process called stratification. Stratification refers to exposing the cloves to temperatures between zero to thirty degrees, which stimulates the growth process. It is important to note that if you live in a region without a distinct winter, there are alternative methods to mimic stratification, which we will discuss in a future video.
2. The Growth Process of Garlic
Garlic plants have a unique growth pattern, and understanding this process is essential for successful cultivation. During the first few months, the garlic cloves will remain dormant beneath the soil. This is why you may not observe significant changes above ground during this period. However, you can monitor the stems for gradual thickening, indicating growth beneath the surface. It's important to note that garlic plants are generally resilient and can tolerate various weather conditions, but proper watering is crucial. The soil should be consistently moist but not overly saturated.
3. Different Varieties of Garlic
There are various garlic varieties available, with two main types being soft neck and hard neck garlic. Soft neck garlic is commonly seen in grocery stores and often has plaited tops. Hard neck garlic, on the other hand, produces a stiff central stalk known as the scape. While both types can be grown successfully, it's important to choose the variety that suits your preferences and growing conditions. Soft neck garlic tends to be more adaptable to different climates, while hard neck garlic offers unique flavors and can be a delight for culinary enthusiasts.
4. Monitoring and Troubleshooting
During the growing process, it's important to monitor your garlic plants for any signs of problems. Yellowing or drying leaves in the lower parts of the plant are natural and should not be a cause for concern. However, if you notice any abnormalities, such as discoloration, wilting, or pest infestations, it's crucial to take action promptly. Proper care and maintenance, including regular weeding, watering, and applying organic fertilizers, can help prevent common issues and promote healthy growth.
5. Harvesting Garlic
Harvesting garlic is an exciting milestone in the gardening journey. While the ideal harvesting time is around eight to nine months after planting, you can choose to harvest them earlier, around four to five months, for smaller but flavorful bulbs. However, for larger bulbs, it's best to wait until they have matured fully. To harvest garlic, gently loosen the soil around the bulbs and carefully pull them out. Take caution not to damage the bulbs during the process. The harvested garlic can be stored and used in various culinary applications, ensuring a fresh and aromatic addition to your meals.

Awesome, thanks for sharing
So I am in oceanic temperate zone 9a on the Washington Stste coast. It is the beginning of March. I just bought some seed garlic and onion bulbs. I have them in the garage for the coldness. Can I plant them now to get the cold stratification effect or is it too late already in the winter? Also bought lily bulbs. Watched your video on those as well. So my question is, when u have plants that like the cold strat, when can't you plant them? Would it be better to wait till after the frost date. Also, I have some apple trees I got before they sold out. I have the roots covered in wood chips with some kelp layed over the top to keep them fed. How long can they stay like that and when do you suggest planting them? I am making essential microbes that I just started the milk and rice water soak and have been collecting stuff to make biochar per The Living Web farms video. Wanted to wait to plant them until the biochar is done but wanted to get the trees before they sold out, which they did. Got a 3 way and a 4 way. I did get books but don't see that anywhere in the books.
Thanks so much. I posted a couple videos touring my garden build project if you want to check it out. I live on a sand bar so doing a raised bed Hugelkulture HugelKelp experiment. Also looking to grow mushrooms and bought a wood chipper. Endless red alder 😁
