How to Grow Garlic: The Definitive Guide for Beginners
Garlic is undoubtedly one of the easiest crops to grow, especially during the fall season. Whether you're an experienced gardener or a beginner, understanding the life cycle of garlic and following a few simple steps can help you grow the most successful garlic crop you've ever had. In this comprehensive guide, we will take you through the process of growing garlic, from preparation to harvest, regardless of your location or growing conditions.
1. Understanding the Life Cycle of Garlic
Before diving into the planting and growing process, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the life cycle of garlic. Each year, the cloves from the current year's bulb are overwintered and become next year's garlic crop. Each clove has the potential to grow into a full bulb with several new cloves. When preparing garlic for planting, remove only the outer layer of paper that holds the bulb together, leaving the paper coating on the individual cloves intact.
2. Preparing Containers for Growing Garlic
If you prefer to grow garlic in containers, the preparation process is relatively straightforward. Garlic isn't picky about container size, as long as it allows for proper drainage and has a depth of at least six inches. Herb planters or pots are excellent choices for growing garlic. Line the containers with newspaper to prevent soil spillage, and then fill them with a mixture of fresh compost and premium potting mix. It's crucial to ensure the soil is loose, well-drained, and pH neutral. Adding about five percent sand to the soil mix improves drainage. Plant each garlic clove by pushing it down into the soil, burying it about an inch deep. Space the cloves three to four inches apart, and make sure the tips are buried.
3. Growing Garlic in Raised Beds or Plots
Growing garlic in raised beds follows a similar process to container gardening. After cleaning and preparing the raised bed, lay down a two-inch or thicker row of potting mix on top of the existing mulch. Place the garlic cloves on the potting mix, ensuring the correct orientation, and bury the rows one to two inches deep with the same potting mix. Mulch the entire bed generously, providing protection and insulation throughout the winter. Water the garlic thoroughly, and you're all set.
4. Mulching and Watering
Mulching plays a vital role in garlic cultivation, regardless of whether you're using containers or raised beds. Apply a thick layer of mulch, at least two inches, to help regulate soil temperature and moisture levels. Organic mulch materials such as straw, grass clippings, or shredded leaves work well. The mulch acts as a protective blanket for the garlic bulbs during winter and prevents excessive moisture loss. After mulching, give the garlic a thorough watering, ensuring the soil is adequately soaked.
5. Care and Maintenance
Once your garlic is planted and mulched, it requires minimal care and maintenance. Garlic is a relatively low-maintenance crop, making it ideal for both experienced and novice gardeners. During the winter, the garlic bulbs will remain dormant, protected by the mulch. Regular watering is generally unnecessary until the spring season. Monitor the moisture levels and adjust watering as needed. Keep an eye out for any signs of pests or diseases, and address them promptly if necessary.
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
- Can I grow garlic in a small garden or balcony? Absolutely! Garlic can be grown in containers or raised beds, making it suitable for small spaces such as gardens or balconies. Ensure proper drainage and follow the planting guidelines mentioned earlier.
- When is the best time to plant garlic? Garlic should be planted about six weeks before the first fall frost date in your area. This timing allows the garlic to establish its root system before the winter sets in. In most regions, this means planting garlic in late September or early October. However, if you live in a warmer climate, you can plant garlic in late fall or even early winter.
- Where can I obtain garlic cloves for planting? You can obtain garlic cloves for planting from several sources. Local nurseries, garden centers, and seed catalogs often carry a variety of garlic bulbs specifically meant for planting. Another option is to purchase garlic from a grocery store, as long as it is organic and hasn't been treated with chemicals. Remember to choose larger, healthy-looking cloves for optimal results.
- What are the ideal growing conditions for garlic? Garlic thrives in full sun, so it's best to choose a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. The soil should be well-drained, loose, and fertile. It's recommended to amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Garlic prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH level, ideally around 6.0 to 7.0.
- How often should I water garlic? Garlic prefers evenly moist soil but doesn't like to be overly saturated. Watering once or twice a week, providing about 1 inch of water per week, is usually sufficient. However, adjust the frequency and amount of water depending on your local weather conditions and the moisture levels in the soil.
- When will my garlic be ready to harvest? Garlic bulbs take approximately 8 to 10 months to mature. The leaves of the garlic plant will begin to turn yellow and dry out, indicating that the bulbs are ready for harvest. Typically, this occurs in late spring or early summer, around June or July. Dig up the bulbs carefully, avoiding any damage, and allow them to cure in a well-ventilated area for a couple of weeks before storing.
- Can I save garlic bulbs for replanting? Absolutely! Saving garlic bulbs for replanting is a great way to continue growing garlic in subsequent seasons. Select the largest and healthiest bulbs from your harvest and set them aside for planting in the fall. Make sure to store the bulbs in a cool, dry place until planting time.
Remember, growing garlic is a rewarding experience that requires patience. By following these guidelines and providing the necessary care, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious, homegrown garlic. Happy gardening!

If you're soil is acidic, then you can add some grounded egg shell (calcium carbonate), then fix it.
Do they require full sun or partial sun?. I live in a mobile home park and have limited area's to plant, but enjoy gardening, it is a great stress relief.
What month do I plant?
Thanks for this informative video! You have convinced me that I actually might be able to grow garlic! Quick question. Should it be watered in the fall if we have a dry spell? Or can we seriously just leave it. I live in the Pacific Northwest but go to my Arizona home in the middle of September. I’d love to be able to plant this before I leave and just leave it but wondered about the watering process. Any tips for me on that, thanks so much
One thing you didn't touch on is wind. My garlic was growing beautifully until about 6 weeks ago when a wind storm blew over 80% of my plants. My first year growing garlic so I didn't realize they needed that protection. Lesson learned.
What is the purpose and why do you need to put newspaper at the bottom?
